Harrington Documents
In addition to documents transcribed in this notebook, the archives include:
- "Katharine S. Tone Engaged to Marry Eastern Man", from Pittsburgh Post Gazette, December 18 1931
- A bill from SALISBURY BROS. FURNITURE CO. to Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) dated June 1932, with an address of 56 Norman Place in Tenafly.
- Father's Day card (undated, 1940s), "Love Preston GeGe and Mommy", with pictures by Preston Meeker Harrington III (1934-2017)
- An obituary for Louis F. Schmitt, a Tenafly friend of Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) and Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983).
- An obituary for Louis Schmitt, a friend of Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983) and Preston Meeker Harrington III (1934-2017).
- An agreement for property improvements (basically a building permit?) for Alice Winslow for work on the Harrington house in Cambridge, NY.
- A Christmas card from Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983) to Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) with a picture of two dogs by a fireplace, reading "To the Boy Friend, from His Best gal, with her love"
- A detailed accounting of the distribution of Anna Reynolds' estate, with amounts going to Edwin Duane Harrington (1873-1945), Alice Winslow, Helen Harrington (1900-1998), Daniel W Harrington (1903-1958), Preston Meeker Harrington Sr (1871-1942), and Ruth Best Harrington (1901-1959).
- A certificate from the US Treasury Department to Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) for "services rendered in behalf of the War Finance Program", dated March 23 1944.
- A Christmas card to Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983) and Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) from "Edie and Roy" dated 1944.
- An ornate certificate certifying that Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) is a "Prince of the Royal Secret, 32ΒΊ" in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the USA, signed March 23 1948.
- A typed transcript of the poem "Away" by James Whitcomb Riley, with a note reading "Verses read at the funeral of Daniel Harrington, August 22 1917, by Rev. John L. Cole."
- A receipt from Evergreen Cemetary Association in Salem N.Y. dated June 1, 1953, to Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980), for $5.00 for a "filling urn". Possibly a cremation urn, though I don't know whose (no deaths in the immediate family happened at the right time to be connected). A handwritten note dated Sep. 19 1982 reads "Helen Harrington can tell you about this cemetery lot." I don't know whose ashes would have gone in the urn, because the date doesn't match up with any deaths in that part of the family tree. Also the receipt isn't for a lot, it's for an urn. Unfortunately Helen isn't available.
- A program from the Nyack High School class of 1920 50th reunion dated June 1 1970. Both Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) and Daniel W Harrington (1903-1958) are on the list of graduates. Daniel had died by this time, so it's probably a list of the entire class.
- Several handwritten pages of genealogical information and other personal details apparently written by Rachel Perham Clement (1838-1920).
- A copy of Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980)'s birth certificate
- A number of property tax receipts from Cambridge, paid by Alice Winslow in the 1940s.
- A Christmas card addressed, as best as I can tell, to "Aunt Mim and Susie", including a photo of the sender. Someone has written "Aunt Ann Reynolds?" on it. The photo resembles Anna Reynolds and her sister Alice Winslow but I don't know who the receipients would be. Their only aunt whose name starts with M is Mary Maynard, but I haven't found any Susie in that region of the tree.
- A fur storage receipt for Alice Winslow at W. P. Herbert & Co of Troy. N.Y. from April 1945 for a mink coat.
- A deed for 48 Washington Ave, South Nyack NY, dated January 1897. This was later the home of Preston Meeker Harrington Sr (1871-1942) and Caroline Elsie Best (1872-1954), but this deed precedes their ownership. It may have been kept because it apparently describes dividing a larger lot, creating this one as a separately owned lot.
- A thank you card for an anniversary gift from "Charles and Miriam", postmarked Englewood, NJ, October 1949, and addressed to Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) and Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983).
- A letter from the State Bank of Albany to Alice Winslow dated October 2, 1945, concerning the estate of Edwin Duane Harrington (1873-1945), mainly concerning documents in his safe deposit box related to Alice (income tax filings and other stuff). It also covers some details of the estate of Anna Reynolds, seeming to imply that Edwin had been Anna's executor until his death.
- A newspaper article on the 200th anniversary of Embury Methodist Church in Cambridge, NY, at one time attended by Daniel Harrington (1834-1917) and family.
- A newspaper article on the history of Hebron residents' involvement in the War of 1812 and the US Civil War. A Civil War list of "The noble 123d regiment under Colonel McDougal" lists Daniel Harrington (1834-1917) twice, once saying "wounded", once not. The article says "most of whom belonged to the One Hundred and Twenty-third regiment", so other sources mentioning the 22nd NY regiment may be more accurate.
- An article clipped from the Journal-News covering the 50th reunion of the Nyack High School class of 1920, mentioning Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980).
- A deed to the house in πΉ Cambridge, New York owned by Rachel Perham Clement (1838-1920), dated March 31, 1868. The price was $2000
- A wedding announcement for Caroline Elsie Best (1872-1954) and Preston Meeker Harrington Sr (1871-1942) sent out by Carrie's parents.
- A copy of "The Pyrotechnic", a newsletter of "Rho of Phi Kappa Tau" fraternity at RPI. It includes a photo of Preston Meeker Harrington Jr (1904-1980) and Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983). The alumni weekend article mentions that "Once again P. M. Harrington and his gracious wife attended, providing the brothers with many interesting insights into the life of Phi Taus of forty-five years ago."
